Multiple Crashes Along Merritt Parkway Raise Ongoing Safety Concerns

A series of serious crashes along the Merritt Parkway has renewed concerns about traffic safety across parts of Fairfield County following several recent deadly and injury-causing collisions.

One of the most severe incidents occurred overnight in Stamford and New Canaan, where a fiery crash shut down the northbound lanes of the Merritt Parkway for several hours.

According to the Connecticut State Police, a female passenger was killed after a vehicle crashed into a tree near Exit 13 and caught fire. Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene as flames engulfed the vehicle during the overnight hours.

While troopers and first responders were handling the fatal collision, a second crash occurred involving a Connecticut State Police cruiser at the same location.

Authorities said the patrol vehicle was struck by another driver, causing the cruiser to burst into flames. Officials confirmed that the trooper assigned to the vehicle was outside the cruiser at the time of impact and was not injured in the incident.

The back-to-back crashes resulted in major lane closures and extensive traffic delays stretching through Stamford and nearby communities as investigators worked to process the scene and remove damaged vehicles.

In recent weeks, several additional crashes have also been reported along the Merritt Parkway corridor.

In one separate incident in New Canaan, authorities investigated a rollover crash that claimed the life of an 87-year-old man from Greenwich. Another two-vehicle collision in Norwalk caused injuries and heavy traffic congestion near Exit 17C.

Transportation and traffic safety officials say crash data released this week shows a continuing pattern of accidents occurring along heavily traveled portions of the Merritt Parkway, particularly near exits, merging lanes, and interchanges throughout Fairfield County.

Emergency responders on Friday also handled several additional vehicle incidents, including reports of motorists losing control and vehicles leaving the roadway before crashing down embankments along sections of the parkway.

Authorities urged drivers traveling through the area to remain alert, reduce speed, and prepare for delays while cleanup crews and investigators continued responding to crash scenes.

Motorists were also encouraged to monitor traffic updates from the Connecticut Department of Transportation for information regarding lane closures, detours, and travel conditions.

Investigations into the various crashes remain ongoing, and officials said additional details concerning injuries, fatalities, and possible contributing factors are expected to be released as the investigations continue.
